Is Manila expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
No. Manila is cheap by Western standards, though pricier than much of Southeast Asia for good hotels: a budget day costs about ₱2,300 per person and a mid-range day about ₱5,900. Hotels in Makati and BGC (plus 12% VAT and often 10% service) and Grab rides through heavy traffic are the main costs; street food, jeepneys and the National Museums (free) are very cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation takes the biggest share: Makati and BGC hotels cost ₱3,500-8,000 a double, and quoted rates may exclude 12% VAT and a 10% service charge. Getting around is the second cost, because traffic is slow and most visitors rely on Grab, with surge prices at rush hour. Food ranges from ₱80-250 street snacks to ₱500-1,000 dinners in Poblacion, and most heritage sites charge under ₱200.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are usually lower in the June-October rainy season, outside long weekends; Christmas season (from September to early January) and Holy Week are busier, though Manila itself empties over Holy Week as residents leave the city.
How to spend less
- Visit the National Museum of Fine Arts and Anthropology, both free (reserve online, closed Mondays).
- Ride the LRT-1 between Ermita, Malate and Binondo's edge outside rush hour.
- Book Grab a few minutes early and avoid 17:00-19:00 in Makati, when surge prices double.
- Check whether hotel rates include 12% VAT and service before booking.
- Eat your way through Binondo on Ongpin Street instead of a sit-down restaurant.
- Shop and eat at the Salcedo Saturday or Legazpi Sunday markets in Makati for good-value food.
