Is Litochoro expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Litochoro is good value: a mountain town at the foot of Olympus with prices well below the big Greek islands and closer to everyday northern Greece. Expect about €55 a day per person on a budget, about €104 mid-range and about €240 for comfort. The extra costs come from the mountain itself — taxis to Prionia, refuge nights and, if you need one, a guide.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, but it is fair: simple guesthouses cost about €45–70 for a double and stone guesthouses with mountain views €70–120. Food is cheap by Greek standards, with taverna meals at €15–22. The mountain adds costs that are easy to forget: a taxi of about €30–40 each way to Prionia (there is no regular bus), refuge beds and meals, and a certified guide if you want to do the Mytikas scramble safely. A car is useful for Dion and Platamonas, which raises the transport budget.
When it is cheaper
Spring and late autumn are usually cheaper than July and August, when hikers and beach visitors fill the town and the coast. Mid-June and September offer good hiking with slightly lower prices than high summer.
How to spend less
- Share the taxi to Prionia with other hikers; ask at your guesthouse or the mountaineering club office.
- Eat a bougatsa and coffee breakfast at a bakery before hiking instead of a hotel breakfast.
- Stay in town rather than on the coast if you plan to hike; you save on transport.
- Bring a sleeping-bag liner and cash for the refuge; it saves extra fees and card problems.
- Walk the lower Enipeas gorge from town for free instead of paying for transport to farther trailheads.
- Travel by train or KTEL bus from Thessaloniki rather than hiring a car if you only plan to hike.
