Is Kyrgyzstan expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
No, Kyrgyzstan is one of the cheapest countries to travel in Central Asia and far cheaper than Europe. A realistic budget day is about 2,600 som per person (roughly US$30), mid-range about 8,500 som, and the biggest cost by far is transport, especially a private driver with a 4x4 for Song-Kol and the south shore of Issyk-Kul.

Where the money goes
Transport is the biggest and most variable cost: marshrutkas and shared taxis are cheap, but much of the classic loop is easier with a private driver at about 6,000–10,000 som a day plus fuel, which is affordable when split between several travellers. Accommodation is cheap: CBT homestays and guesthouses in Karakol, Kochkor and Bokonbaevo cost about 1,200–2,500 som a room, and yurt camps 2,500–4,000 som with meals. Activities add up: horse riding at Song-Kol (about 1,500–2,500 som for a few hours), the Altyn-Arashan hot springs (about 300–500 som) and an eagle hunter demonstration (about 3,000–5,000 som for a group). Food is simple and inexpensive.
When it is cheaper
Outside the mid-June to mid-September season, guesthouses and Issyk-Kul resorts are cheaper and quieter, but Song-Kol's yurt camps are closed and many mountain routes are blocked by snow.
How to spend less
- Travel between towns by marshrutka or shared taxi from Bishkek's Eastern Bus Station rather than hiring a driver for every leg.
- Share a private driver for Song-Kol with other travellers met through CBT offices or guesthouses.
- Book homestays through CBT in Kochkor and Karakol; breakfast is usually included.
- Walk up to Altyn-Arashan instead of paying for a seat in the old Soviet 4x4s.
- Eat at cafés and bazaars: samsa, lagman and plov are filling and cheap.
- Carry cash in som outside the towns; there are no card machines or ATMs at the yurt camps.
