Kyrgyzstan on a budget: how to do it well

Kyrgyzstan is excellent on a budget if you travel by marshrutka and stay in homestays. Plan on about 2,600 som per person per day (bed 1,000 som, food 800 som, sights 300 som, transport 500 som), more on days with a private driver or a yurt camp.

Free things to do
- Walk Ala-Too Square in Bishkek and watch the changing of the guard
- Browse the Osh Bazaar in Bishkek
- Wander Erkindik Boulevard and Panfilov Park
- See Karakol's wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral from outside and the town's Sunday animal market
- Walk along the shore and swim in Issyk-Kul
- Hike from the Ak-Suu trailhead up the Arashan valley (bathing in the hot springs is extra)
Cheap eats
- Samsa from a tandoor: about 60–100 som
- Ashlyan-fu in Karakol: about 100–150 som
- Boorsok with tea: very cheap at cafés and homestays
- Lagman, manti or plov at a café: about 300–600 som for a meal
- Dried fruit and kurut from Osh Bazaar: a few hundred som
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in CBT homestays and guesthouses in Karakol, Kochkor and Bokonbaevo, at about 1,200–2,500 som a room with breakfast, and in hostels in Bishkek. Yurt camps cost about 2,500–4,000 som with meals.
Getting around cheaply
Marshrutkas and shared taxis are the cheapest way between towns; a seat from Bishkek to Karakol costs about 500–800 som. In Bishkek, use city buses or Yandex Go; from Manas airport, a Yandex Go taxi costs about 600–900 som. There are almost no passenger trains.
A sample budget day
- Morning: marshrutka from Bishkek's Eastern Bus Station towards Cholpon-Ata (a few hundred som)
- Lunch: samsa and tea on the way (about 150 som)
- Afternoon: walk the petroglyph field at Cholpon-Ata (small fee) and swim in Issyk-Kul
- Evening: lagman at a café (about 400 som) and a guesthouse room shared (about 1,000 som each)
- Total: about 2,000–2,600 som
More ways to save
- Travel mid-June to mid-September but outside July–August peaks for easier homestay bookings.
- Bring clean US dollar or euro notes to exchange at kiosks, which usually give fair rates.
- Ask homestays to include dinner; it is often good value and saves looking for food in villages.
- Buy a local SIM (Beeline, MegaCom or O!) at the airport instead of roaming.
- Join other travellers at CBT offices to share drivers, horses and guides.
- Bring your own warm layers and head torch rather than buying gear in Bishkek.
