Is Galapagos Islands expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, the Galapagos are expensive, far more than mainland Ecuador: everything is shipped in, and the best wildlife sites need paid boats and guides. Island-hopping on your own costs about US$295 per person per day mid-range, before the one-off US$200 park fee and US$20 Transit Control Card. A live-aboard cruise usually costs much more, often several hundred dollars a day.

Where the money goes
Day tours are the biggest cost: snorkelling and island trips run about US$150-250 each, and most of the famous sites can only be reached by boat with a licensed guide. Accommodation is the second, from US$50-90 for a guesthouse to US$350-800 for highland eco-lodges. Food in the towns is reasonable for local set meals but rises fast in tourist restaurants. Add the flights from Quito or Guayaquil, the US$200 park fee and the US$20 transit card, both paid in cash.
When it is cheaper
May-June and September-November are usually quieter, with more room for last-minute tour and cruise deals (sometimes 10-30% off, check current offers). Christmas-New Year, Easter and July-August are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Base yourself on land and island-hop by public speedboat instead of booking a cruise.
- Do the free sites on your own: Tortuga Bay, Las Grietas, La Loberia, Cerro Tijeretas and the Darwin Station area.
- Book day tours in person a day or two ahead in Puerto Ayora, where last-minute prices can be lower.
- Eat set lunches (almuerzos) in local restaurants away from the waterfront.
- Bring your own snorkel and mask to avoid daily rental fees.
- Carry enough cash in US dollars: ATMs are few and card fees are common.
