Is Fiji expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Fiji can be expensive, mainly because island resorts and boat transfers are priced for holidaymakers from Australia, New Zealand and the US. On a budget expect about FJ$200 (roughly €80) per person a day sharing a room, mid-range about FJ$490 and comfort about FJ$1,250. Life on the main island of Viti Levu is much cheaper than on the outer islands.

Where the money goes
Accommodation and island transport take most of the budget. Island resorts in the Mamanucas and Yasawas cost FJ$900-2,500 a night, and even backpacker lodges add a compulsory meal plan because there is nowhere else to eat. The Yasawa Flyer, seaplane or speedboat transfers and activities such as the Beqa shark dive (about FJ$400-500) add up fast. On Viti Levu, buses, local food and markets are cheap.
When it is cheaper
November to April, the wet season, is low season, when many resorts cut rates by roughly 20-40%, apart from Christmas and New Year. Australian and New Zealand school holidays, in late June-July and late September-early October, are the most expensive times.
How to spend less
- Stay on Viti Levu (Wailoaloa Beach or the Coral Coast) for part of the trip, where rooms and food are cheaper than on the islands.
- Buy a Bula Pass for the Yasawa Flyer if you plan to stop on two or more islands.
- Eat curries and roti in Nadi town rather than at resorts.
- Use Queens Road buses for the Coral Coast and Suva; fares are a few dollars.
- Bring snorkel gear; many beaches have good reef straight off the sand.
- Travel in May or early June, before the July school holidays, for dry weather and lower prices.
