Is Cancun expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Cancún is expensive by Mexican standards but can be cheap if you live like a local. A budget day staying downtown costs about MXN 1,300 per person, a mid-range day in the Hotel Zone about MXN 4,400, and resorts much more. The Hotel Zone, eco-parks and tours priced in US dollars are where the money goes; downtown food and buses are cheap.

Where the money goes
The Hotel Zone is priced for international visitors: beachfront rooms start around MXN 2,500-5,000, restaurant meals often cost double the downtown price, and drinks at beach bars are expensive. Tours and eco-parks such as Xcaret or Xel-Há are usually priced in dollars and can cost more than a night's hotel. Day trips to Chichén Itzá and Tulum add entry fees (a federal plus a state fee) and transport. Downtown Cancún, ADO buses and street food are inexpensive.
When it is cheaper
Hotel rates usually fall from late April to early December outside Mexican and US holidays, often by a third or more compared with the December-April peak; September and October are the cheapest but carry the highest hurricane risk.
How to spend less
- Stay downtown (El Centro) and take the R1 or R2 bus to the Hotel Zone beaches for a few pesos.
- Eat around Parque de las Palapas and in downtown taquerías, not in the Hotel Zone.
- Use ADO buses to Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Valladolid instead of tours.
- Book eco-parks online in advance for discounts and check what food, drinks and transport are included.
- Pay in pesos, not dollars: prices in dollars often use a poor exchange rate.
- Use the free public beaches such as Playa Delfines; all beaches in Mexico are public.

Common questions
How much does a day in Cancún cost?
About MXN 1,300 per person on a budget, MXN 4,400 mid-range and about MXN 12,700 for comfort, sharing a double. Tours and parks are extra.
Should I pay in pesos or dollars?
Pesos. Many places accept dollars but at a poor exchange rate.
Is all-inclusive worth it in Cancún?
It can be if you plan to eat and drink mainly at the hotel. If you want day trips and local food, a downtown or Isla Mujeres base is usually cheaper.
