Cancun on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, if you stay downtown rather than in the Hotel Zone: allow about MXN 1,300 per person per day, with about MXN 500 for a shared room, MXN 350 for food, MXN 300 for sights and MXN 150 for buses. Resorts, parks and private tours are what break a budget.

Free things to do
- Swim at Playa Delfines, the best public beach in the Hotel Zone, with the 'Cancún' sign.
- Spend an evening at Parque de las Palapas downtown, with food stalls and families.
- Walk Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres (you pay only the ferry).
- Walk Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen on the way back from a day trip.
- Watch the sunset over the lagoon side of the Hotel Zone.
- Explore Puerto Morelos' beach and plaza, a quieter fishing village 30 minutes south.
Cheap eats
- Tacos al pastor or cochinita in downtown taquerías: about MXN 20-40 each.
- Marquesitas at Parque de las Palapas: about MXN 40-70.
- Comida corrida (set lunch) in a downtown fonda: about MXN 100-150.
- Panuchos and salbutes (Yucatecan stuffed tortillas): a few dozen pesos each.
- Fresh fruit and agua fresca from a market stall: about MXN 30-50.
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay downtown (El Centro), where hostels and simple hotels cost about MXN 900-1,600 for a double and dorm beds less. Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos have mid-range guesthouses at MXN 2,000-4,000 that are better value than the Hotel Zone.
Getting around cheaply
R1 and R2 buses run the length of the Hotel Zone and downtown for a few pesos. ADO buses connect the airport with downtown and Playa del Carmen, and the city with Tulum and Valladolid, for much less than a taxi. The Tren Maya links Cancún with Valladolid and Chichén Itzá; check timetables.
A sample budget day
- Morning: R2 bus to Playa Delfines for a swim (about MXN 30 return).
- Lunch: comida corrida downtown (about MXN 120).
- Afternoon: El Rey Maya ruins and the Maya Museum in the Hotel Zone (a few hundred pesos).
- Evening: tacos and marquesitas at Parque de las Palapas (about MXN 150), with a hostel or shared room downtown.
- Total: about MXN 1,300
More ways to save
- Take the ADO bus from the airport to downtown instead of a private transfer.
- Book Chichén Itzá independently by ADO bus or Tren Maya and arrive at opening, rather than on a full-day tour.
- Bring snorkel gear: renting it at every cenote and beach adds up.
- Pay the Visitax online yourself before you leave; it is a small fee, not a reason to pay an agent.
- Withdraw pesos from bank ATMs inside branches or malls to avoid high fees and card skimmers.
- Choose one eco-park at most and fill other days with cenotes, which cost MXN 100-250.
