Is Brazil expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Brazil is mid-priced: cheaper than Western Europe or the USA, but pricier than most of South America for hotels and attractions in Rio. A budget day is about R$ 340 per person, mid-range about R$ 760 and comfort about R$ 1,800, before domestic flights. Distances are huge, so flights between regions are a major extra cost.

Where the money goes
Rooms in Rio's beach districts are the biggest cost, with mid-range doubles in Copacabana and Ipanema around R$ 500-900 and peak-season prices far higher. Headline attractions such as Sugarloaf and Corcovado charge foreigners well above local prices, and domestic flights between Rio, Foz do Iguaçu and Salvador can each cost hundreds of reais. Eating can be cheap at per-kilo restaurants and bakeries, though restaurants add a 10% service charge.
When it is cheaper
Prices drop outside summer and Carnival, especially April to June and August to October, when hotels in Rio are often noticeably cheaper. Carnival and New Year can double or triple room rates, with minimum stays.
How to spend less
- Eat lunch at 'comida a quilo' (pay-by-weight) restaurants, the best value in Brazil.
- Book domestic flights early; fares rise sharply close to the date.
- Take the metro in Rio rather than taxis between Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo and the centre.
- Visit Sugarloaf and Corcovado on clear days only, so you do not pay for a view of cloud.
- Avoid Carnival and New Year unless they are the reason for your trip.
- Use Uber or 99 instead of street taxis; fares are usually lower and fixed in advance.
