Is Belize expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Plan on about BZ$185 (US$93) a day per person on a budget, BZ$420 mid-range and BZ$920 for comfort. Tours — caves, Maya sites and snorkelling — are the biggest cost, followed by beds on the cayes.

Where the money goes
Guided tours take the biggest share: many highlights, such as the ATM cave, the Blue Hole and the reef reserves, can only be visited with licensed guides, and park fees are added on top. Accommodation on the cayes and jungle lodges is priced for North American visitors, and hotels add a 9% hotel tax. Food is cheap in local places (rice and beans, stew chicken, fry jacks), but imported goods and restaurant meals in resort areas cost much more, and restaurants add 12.5% GST. Domestic flights and private shuttles also add up quickly.
When it is cheaper
The green season, roughly June to mid-November, brings lower rates at many lodges and resorts, sometimes noticeably below the December–April peak. Some places close in September and October, the riskiest hurricane months.
How to spend less
- Always ask whether a price is in Belize dollars or US dollars — the rate is fixed at 2 to 1, and confusion can double the price.
- Use the public buses between Belize City and San Ignacio (about BZ$10) instead of private shuttles (about BZ$50–100 per person).
- Book the ATM cave and snorkel tours directly with local licensed operators in San Ignacio and Caye Caulker rather than through resort desks.
- Stay on Caye Caulker rather than Ambergris Caye; it is smaller, more laid back and generally cheaper.
- Eat in local diners and from street vendors: tacos, panades and garnaches cost very little.
- Bring cash in small notes; some small businesses add a surcharge for cards.
