Belize on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Belize on a budget is possible but harder than elsewhere in Central America, because the best experiences are guided tours. A realistic minimum is about BZ$185 (US$93) a day per person sharing a room — BZ$50 for a bed, BZ$50 for food, BZ$70 towards tours and BZ$15 for transport.

Cheap eats
- Stew chicken with rice and beans — BZ$15–20

- Pupusas and tamales at the San Ignacio Saturday market — about BZ$2–5 each

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay on Caye Caulker and in the centre of San Ignacio, where hostels and guesthouses are within walking distance of the tour offices. Dorm beds typically run about BZ$40–70 and basic doubles BZ$80–150. Placencia also has simple guesthouses in the village.
Getting around cheaply
Public buses connect Belize City with San Ignacio and the south cheaply (Belize City–San Ignacio about BZ$10, 2–3 hours). Water taxis run from Belize City to Caye Caulker (about BZ$45–60) and San Pedro. From the international airport, there is no public bus to the centre; share a taxi or a shuttle with other travellers to reduce the cost.

More ways to save
- Pick one or two signature tours (ATM cave, Hol Chan) and fill other days with free swimming and walking.
- Travel in the green season (June to mid-November, avoiding peak hurricane months) for lower lodge rates.
- Pay in Belize dollars where possible; change given in US dollars is sometimes rounded against you.
- Buy snacks and water at local grocery stores rather than resort shops.
- Ask your hostel for group discounts on tours booked together.
- Take the overnight or early bus rather than a domestic flight when you have time.
