Is Azores expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
The Azores are moderately priced: cheaper than most of Western Europe and similar to mainland Portugal for food, but car hire and inter-island flights push the daily cost up. Expect about €100 a day per person on a budget, about €185 mid-range and €355 or more for comfort. Most of the money goes on beds, a rental car and boat trips, while viewpoints, crater lakes and many walks are free.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: guesthouses in central Ponta Delgada and Madalena start around €60–100 a night, marina-area hotels are €110–190, and spa or vineyard hotels €200–400. Transport comes next, because you need a car on each island (about €35–70 a day on São Miguel) and a flight between island groups (about €60–120 one way). Boat trips and guided activities such as whale watching (€60–75) or a Mount Pico guide (€60–90) are the other big extras. Food is reasonable by European standards: a main course is €12–22 and a full dinner with wine €20–35 per person.
When it is cheaper
From November to March hotel and car-hire prices are usually noticeably lower than in July and August, when demand peaks. The trade-off is wetter, windier weather and more flight and ferry disruption; check rates for your dates.
How to spend less
- Book the rental car as early as possible for summer; on the smaller islands cars can run out and late prices climb.
- Fly into one island group and out of another (for example São Miguel in, Horta or Pico out) to avoid paying for a return inter-island flight.
- Spend your free time at the viewpoints and crater lakes, such as Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, which cost nothing.
- Visit the Gorreana tea factory, where entry and tasting are free.
- Order the prato do dia (dish of the day) at lunch in a tasca; it is usually the cheapest full meal.
- Send back the couvert (bread, butter, olives, cheese) if you don't want it, because it is charged when eaten.
