Azores on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, with some planning: the landscapes are free, and food is good value, but you still need a car and probably a flight between islands. A realistic minimum is about €100 a day per person sharing a room — around €35 for a bed, €25 for food, €15 for sights and €25 for transport.

Free things to do
- The Vista do Rei and Boca do Inferno viewpoints over the lakes of Sete Cidades
- The viewpoint over Lagoa do Fogo and the path down to its shore
- The fumaroles and lakeside caldeiras of Furnas, where cozido is lifted from the ground
- The Gorreana tea factory and plantation, with free tasting
- Walking the centre of Ponta Delgada, from the Portas da Cidade to the Igreja Matriz
- The painted quay of Horta marina on Faial
Cheap eats
- Bolo lêvedo from a bakery for breakfast — about €1–2
- Prato do dia (dish of the day) in a tasca — often around €10–14
- A bifana or prego sandwich in a café — a few euros
- Queijadas da Vila from Vila Franca do Campo — about €1–1.50 each
- A plate of São Jorge cheese with bread — about €5–8
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in guesthouses and small hostels in central Ponta Delgada on São Miguel and Madalena on Pico, close to restaurants, ports and car-rental offices. Simple rooms start around €60–100 a night for a double; book early for July and August.
Getting around cheaply
Share a rental car; it is the cheapest practical way to reach viewpoints and trailheads (about €35–70 a day on São Miguel). Buses link towns but are infrequent. Between Pico and Faial, the Atlânticoline ferry takes about 30 minutes and costs a few euros, far less than a flight. From Ponta Delgada airport, the city centre is only a few kilometres away by taxi or bus.
A sample budget day
- Morning: bolo lêvedo and coffee (about €3), then drive to the free Sete Cidades viewpoints
- Lunch: prato do dia in a village tasca (about €12)
- Afternoon: Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint and a swim at Caldeira Velha (about €10–12)
- Evening: simple dinner or supermarket picnic (about €10–15)
- Total: about €100 including a shared room (about €35) and your share of a rental car and fuel (about €25)
More ways to save
- Split car hire and fuel with travel companions; it is the biggest saving on the islands.
- Cover the Pico–Faial pair by ferry instead of flying between them.
- Choose one paid boat trip (whale watching) rather than several tours.
- Pick Poça da Dona Beija (about €8–10) if you want a cheaper hot-spring soak than Terra Nostra.
- Buy cheese, bread and fruit at Mercado da Graça or a supermarket for picnics at viewpoints.
- Travel in May, June or September for good weather with lower prices than July–August.
