Is Astypalaia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Astypalaia is mid-priced for a Greek island: cheaper than Mykonos or Santorini, but not a bargain in July and August. Expect about €80 a day per person on a tight budget, about €160 mid-range and €300 or more for comfort. The money goes on rooms, a hire car or scooter, and seafood priced by weight.

Where the money goes
Rooms are the largest cost: studios in Livadi start at about €50–90 a night, rooms in Chora and Pera Gialos are about €80–170, and boutique suites run €180–350, with the sharpest rises in August. The second cost is getting around, because the best beaches are at the end of dirt roads and the bus network is small, so most visitors hire a car (€40–70 a day) or scooter. Eating out is reasonable if you stick to grilled meat, salads and meze, but lobster and fresh fish are sold by the kilo and can double a bill. Getting there also counts: the ferry from Piraeus is long, and flights from Athens are limited.
When it is cheaper
June and September are usually noticeably cheaper than late July and August, especially for rooms and car hire. From November to April many places close, so low season does not always mean more choice.
How to spend less
- Ask the price per kilo before ordering fish or lobster pasta, and agree on the weight.
- Book the hire car or scooter early for July and August; the island's small fleet runs out and late prices are higher.
- Stay in Livadi rooms to let rather than Chora if you have a car; prices are lower and Chora is 5 minutes away.
- Buy breakfast from the bakeries in Chora — cheese pies and koulouria — instead of hotel breakfasts.
- Fill the tank near Chora or Livadi before heading west, and drive slowly on dirt roads; many rental contracts do not cover tyre and underbody damage.
- Book the boat trip for your first calm day, so a meltemi cancellation does not leave you paying for a second attempt elsewhere.
