Cheap eats
- Chambo with nsima at a local restaurant: about MK10,000-20,000

Where to sleep for less
Backpacker lodges in Cape Maclear and Lilongwe Area 3 offer dorms, camping and simple rooms, often with kitchens, at about US$25-60 for a double. Camping is common and cheaper still.
Getting around cheaply
AXA coaches and minibuses link the main towns cheaply but slowly. From Kamuzu International Airport, a taxi to Lilongwe takes about 30 minutes; agree the fare first. For Liwonde, join a lodge transfer or shared driver.

Common questions
Can I travel Malawi on a budget?

Can I get to Liwonde by public transport?
Buses reach nearby towns, but not the park itself. Arrange a lodge transfer or a shared driver.
Where can I withdraw money in Malawi?
Use bank ATMs in Lilongwe, Blantyre and larger towns; cash is hard to find in rural areas and at the lake.
