Is Malawi expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Malawi is cheap for daily life but not for safari-style travel: lodges, park fees and transport are priced in US dollars and add up quickly. A mid-range day is about US$190 per person, with transport (a car and driver) and park activities taking much of it. Backpackers on buses and in lakeside lodges can spend far less.

Where the money goes
Transport is the hidden cost: roads are slow, buses do not reach the parks, and a car with driver costs US$100-150 a day plus fuel. Park fees and activities such as game drives, boat safaris and guided walks are the next biggest share. Accommodation ranges from US$25-60 backpacker lodges to US$400-900 full-board safari lodges in Liwonde. Local food, markets and drinks are cheap in kwacha, which has lost much value against the dollar.
When it is cheaper
The rainy season (November to April) brings lower lodge rates and some green-season offers, often 20-40% off (check current deals), but some dirt roads become difficult and a few lodges close.
How to spend less
- Use AXA coaches and minibuses between towns, and only hire a driver for park sections.
- Stay in backpacker lodges at Cape Maclear and in Lilongwe Area 3.
- Book boat safaris on the Shire River, often better value than game drives.
- Eat at local restaurants and markets in kwacha rather than lodge restaurants.
- Withdraw kwacha in Lilongwe; ATMs are scarce elsewhere.
- Share a car and driver with other travellers to split the daily cost.
