Short answer

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in rooms in Neapoli or Agios Nikolaos on the mainland, at about €45–80 a night, 20–30 minutes from the ferry. Rooms on the island cost more, about €80–140 in the village.
Getting around cheaply
A car is almost essential: KTEL Lakonias buses reach Neapoli from Athens (about 5 hours, around €30–35), then a taxi covers the last 15–20 minutes to Pounta. The foot-passenger ferry costs roughly €1–2. On the island, the summer bus and a scooter (about €20–30 a day) are the cheapest options.
A sample budget day
- Morning: early swim at Simos (free)
- Lunch: picnic on the dunes (about €8)
- Afternoon: walk to Sarakiniko and back to Simos for the evening light
- Evening: grilled sardines in the village (about €12–15)
- Total: about €30–35 plus your bed (about €30), so roughly €65
More ways to save
- Cross as a foot passenger if you are staying in the village.
- Book rooms early for June and September; cheaper ones go first.
- Choose a room with a fridge and buy breakfast in the shops.
- Combine Pavlopetri, Kastania and Neapoli in one mainland day to save fuel.
- Skip sunbeds: the sand is soft and the dunes give some shelter.
- Avoid the weekend around 15 August entirely.
