Where to stay in Elafonisos
Elafonisos is tiny, shaped like a small triangle dominated by the main village port and the iconic southern beaches. Most accommodation is clustered in the port village, providing immediate access to tavernas, while the southern coast is home to sparse, high-end resorts. Staying in the village is essential if you lack a car, as the island lacks a reliable public bus network beyond basic summer connections.

Elafonisos Port Village
This is the island’s only dense hub, featuring a picturesque waterfront lined with fish tavernas and cafes. It feels lively during peak summer evenings. Everything here is walkable, including the small central church of Agios Spyridon and the local port. You can reach the village’s own sandy beaches on foot, but the famous Simos Beach requires a short drive or bike ride.
Simos Beach Area
Located on the southern peninsula, this area feels rugged and serene, dominated by the famous Simos and Sarakiniko dunes. There are no paved streets here, just sandy paths connecting a few upscale villas and campsites. It is entirely isolated; you must walk through sandy trails to move between dunes and the nearby beach bars. You are completely dependent on a vehicle here.
Pounda Coastal Strip
Technically located just across the narrow channel on the mainland, this area offers a different perspective on the ferry crossing. It feels quiet and functional, serving as the main staging point for the underwater ruins of Pavlopetri. It is walkable to the ferry dock, but you will spend your time commuting to the island itself. It lacks the evening energy of the village.

Avoid staying near the main ferry port docks if you are a light sleeper, as the constant arrival of tourist cars and delivery trucks creates noise until late at night. Additionally, avoid booking accommodations deep within the interior agricultural plots; they lack character and require a tedious, dusty walk to reach any beach or dining service.

Common questions
Do I need a car on Elafonisos?
Yes, a car is highly recommended unless you intend to stay exclusively in the port village. While the island is small, the main attractions like Simos Beach are not within comfortable walking distance from the town center during the intense midday heat, and public transport is practically nonexistent outside of high-season shuttle services.
When is the best time to visit?
Aim for late May, June, or September. July and August see a massive influx of mainland Greek tourists, causing extreme overcrowding at Simos Beach and making dinner reservations in the port village nearly impossible. Visiting outside of these peak months allows you to enjoy the island’s clear waters without the stressful queues for the ferry.
Are there ATMs on the island?
Yes, there is at least one ATM located in the village, but it frequently runs out of cash during busy weekends or high season. Always carry sufficient cash with you from the mainland, as several smaller tavernas and shops still prefer or occasionally require cash payments despite the prevalence of card machines in larger establishments.
