Amalfi Coast on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
The Amalfi Coast is hard but possible on a budget if you sleep in Sorrento or Agerola and use buses. Plan on about €135 per person per day in high season (bed €70, food €35, boats and sights €20, transport €10), less in spring and autumn.
A realistic daily budget
| Budget | Mid-range | Comfort | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed (per person, sharing) | €70 | €140 | €450 |
| Food & drink | €35 | €65 | €140 |
| Sights & tickets | €20 | €50 | €150 |
| Local transport | €10 | €30 | €80 |
| Per person, per day | €135 | €285 | €820 |

Free things to do
- Walk the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) from Bomerano to Nocelle above Positano
- Wander the stepped lanes of Positano and the Via dei Mulini down to the Spiaggia Grande
- Visit the tiny fishing village of Atrani through the tunnel from Amalfi
- Sunset from the cliff path between Positano's main beach and Fornillo
- Swim from the free public sections of the beaches
- Look inside the majolica-domed church of Santa Maria Assunta in Positano
Cheap eats
- Pizza or slice from a bakery: about €3–8
- Panino with local mozzarella and tomato from a deli: about €5–8
- Lemon granita: about €3–4
- Sfogliatella or delizia al limone pastry: about €2–4
- Pasta at a simple trattoria away from the seafront: about €12–18
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in Sorrento or Agerola, where doubles run about €100–160 in high season, or in the few hostels around the coast (dorm beds often roughly €40–70 in summer). Praiano and the villages above the coast are also cheaper than Positano.
Getting around cheaply
The cheapest way around is the SITA bus along the coast road, a few euros per ride. From Naples airport, take the bus to Sorrento instead of a €120–150 private transfer, then continue by bus. Ferries cost more but are worth it for one or two scenic legs.
A sample budget day
- Morning: bus to Bomerano and hike the Path of the Gods (bus fares a few euros)
- Lunch: panino and fruit from a deli in Agerola (about €8)
- Afternoon: walk down to Positano and swim at a free beach
- Evening: pizza and a drink in Positano or back in Sorrento (about €20), bus home
- Total: about €35–45 plus your bed (€70 per person), so roughly €110–135
More ways to save
- Buy bus tickets before boarding at tabacchi shops; they are not always sold on the bus.
- Travel in May, June or late September for lower room prices and calmer buses.
- Carry a refillable bottle and use public fountains.
- Picnic on a public beach instead of paying beach-club prices.
- Base yourself in one town for the whole stay to avoid paying transfers with luggage.
- Skip Capri boat tours in favour of a public ferry and a walk if money is tight.
