May–June and September–October are best, with Baku highs of about 22–29°C in May–June and 20–26°C in September–October, and the mountain roads open. July and August reach about 31–33°C on average in Baku (heatwaves higher), while winter is mild on the coast but snowy in the mountains.

Season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

March is cool (about 11°C) and Novruz brings bonfires around 20–21 March; by May highs reach about 22°C and the countryside is green.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Hot and dry in Baku, with highs of about 29–33°C; it is the time for the cooler mountains around Quba, Sheki and Khinalug.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

September (about 26°C) and October (about 20°C) are pleasant, with apple harvest in Quba; November cools to about 15°C.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Mild on the coast at about 8–10°C but windy and grey; snow closes the road to Khinalug at times and Shahdag's ski resort opens.
