Paris or Vienna? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Paris for a first big European city: the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and a bakery on every corner. Pick Vienna for a calmer, more orderly capital of palaces, concert halls, coffee houses and wine taverns; on our numbers it is also slightly cheaper, about €198 a day mid-range against €215 in Paris.
Paris: suits couples, honeymooners, first-timers and older travellers who want Europe's classic landmarks, museums and food culture.
Vienna: suits couples and solo travellers who want imperial palaces, classical music, coffee houses and a calm, easy city.

Common questions
Is Paris or Vienna cheaper?
Vienna, slightly, on our mid-range figures: about €198 per person per day against about €215 in Paris. Hotel rooms in Vienna tend to be larger for the money, public transport is cheap, and the State Opera sells low-cost standing-room tickets. Paris is easy to do cheaply too, with picnics from bakeries and markets and set-lunch menus in neighbourhood bistros.
Can I take the train from Paris to Vienna?
Yes, but it is a long day: roughly 11–12 hours with at least one change, usually in Germany. Night-train services on this route have changed in recent years, so check current timetables. For most visitors the flight of about 2 hours plus airport time is the practical choice, unless you want to stop in Strasbourg, Munich or Salzburg on the way.
When is the best time to visit?
Our data marks July for both, with Paris around 25°C in June and Vienna about 28°C in July. Late spring and early autumn are also very comfortable and less crowded. Vienna's opera and concert season runs mainly from September to June, so summer visitors miss the State Opera. Winter is colder in Vienna, about 5°C in January.
Which is better for a first trip to Europe?
Paris, for most people. Its landmarks, museums and food culture are the European classics, and a first visit there becomes a reference point for later trips. Vienna is easier, calmer and very rewarding, especially for lovers of classical music and art, but it makes a better second or third city, or a pairing with Prague, Budapest or Salzburg.
