Doing both in one trip

10 days: 5 in New York + 5 in San Francisco

Start in New York for the intense sightseeing, then slow down in San Francisco with day trips to the coast and redwoods. Book open-jaw flights to avoid crossing the country twice.

Getting between them: They are over 4,000 km apart, so combining them only makes sense on a longer trip. Fly: about 6 h non-stop westbound to SFO (around 5 h 30 eastbound), plus airport time, so allow most of a day. Distance about 4,129 km as the crow flies. Check current timetables.

Common questions

Is New York or San Francisco cheaper?

New York, slightly, by our mid-range estimate: about €281 per person per day against €291 in San Francisco. Both are among the most expensive US cities. San Francisco's hotels and restaurants are especially pricey, and day trips to wine country add more. In New York, walking, the subway and cheap eats such as pizza slices help balance high hotel prices.

When is the best time to visit San Francisco?

Our data favours June to October, but summer is often foggy and cool, with August highs around 20°C, so bring layers. September and October are usually the warmest and clearest months. Winter is mild, about 13°C in December, with more rain. New York is best around May, as summer is hot and humid and winter is cold.

Do I need a car in San Francisco?

Not in the city. Muni buses, streetcars, cable cars and BART cover the main areas, and parking is expensive and car break-ins are a known problem. Rent a car only for day trips to Napa, Sonoma or along the coast, or if San Francisco is the start of a California road trip.

Which is better for a first trip to the US?

New York, for most people. In five days you can see a huge amount without a car, and the city's museums, landmarks and neighbourhoods are hard to match. San Francisco is better for travellers who want a city with easy access to nature and plan to explore more of California. With ten days or more, do both.
