Naples or Rome? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Rome for a first trip to Italy: the Colosseum, the Vatican and the Pantheon are the essential sights, and the city is easier to navigate. Pick Naples for pizza in its home city, a raw, energetic old town, and Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast nearby. Costs are nearly the same — about €172 a day mid-range in Rome against €175 in Naples — and the fast train takes only about 1 h 10, so many people do both.
Naples: suits solo travellers, friends and backpackers who want street food, ancient sites and a city with strong local character.
Rome: suits first-timers, families and older travellers who want ancient history, great churches and classic Roman food.

Common questions
Is Naples or Rome cheaper?
They are almost the same by our mid-range estimate: about €172 per person per day in Rome and €175 in Naples. Eating out is cheaper in Naples, where a classic pizza costs very little, while Rome has more hotel choice at every level. Day trips to Pompeii and the coast add to the cost of a stay in Naples.
Can I visit Naples as a day trip from Rome?
Yes. High-speed trains take about 1 h 10, so you can see the old centre, eat pizza and visit the Archaeological Museum in a day. Pompeii as well is possible, but makes for a very long day. With time, one or two nights in Naples is much better, especially if you want to visit Pompeii or the coast.
Is Naples safe for tourists?
Naples is generally fine for visitors taking normal city precautions. Petty theft is the main risk, so keep phones and bags secure around the station, on crowded transport and in busy streets. Traffic and scooters can be more of a surprise than crime, so cross carefully. Most visitors have no problems and find the city welcoming.
How do I get from Naples to Pompeii?
The Circumvesuviana local train runs from Napoli Garibaldi, next to the main station, to Pompei Scavi, taking about 35–40 minutes. It is cheap but often crowded. Tourist trains and buses also run on the route in season, and tours include transport. Arrive early to avoid the heat and crowds, and allow at least four hours for the site.
