Mostar or Sarajevo? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Sarajevo if you have only time for one city: more to see, more food, recent history and mountains, at slightly lower cost (about 170 KM a day mid-range against 190 KM in Mostar). Pick Mostar for the Old Bridge, a short stay and day trips into sunny Herzegovina. Most people should do both.

Mostar: suits couples and first-timers on a short stop who want the Old Bridge, warm weather and Herzegovina day trips.

Sarajevo: suits solo travellers, friends and backpackers who want a full city with Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian quarters, coffee culture and recent history.

Doing both in one trip

5 days: 2 in Mostar + 3 in Sarajevo

Either order; Mostar is often reached from the Croatian coast, so many visitors do Mostar first and end in Sarajevo, which has the main airport.

Getting between them: Train about 2 h on a scenic route through the Neretva valley, or bus about 2 h 30; driving about 2 h. Train times change; check current timetables. Distance about 72 km as the crow flies. Check current timetables.

Common questions

Is Mostar or Sarajevo cheaper?

Sarajevo, slightly. Our mid-range estimate is about 170 KM per person per day in Sarajevo against about 190 KM in Mostar. Both are cheap by European standards. Mostar's Old Town restaurants charge more because of tour-bus traffic, so eating a few streets away from the bridge saves money.

When is the best time to visit?

September and October suit both. Mostar is very hot in summer, about 33°C in July, while Sarajevo is cooler at about 29°C thanks to its altitude. In January Sarajevo drops to about 6°C and can be smoggy and snowy, while Mostar stays near 10°C.

Is one day enough for Mostar?

One full day covers the Old Bridge, the bazaar and a mosque or two, and many people visit on a day trip. Staying overnight is better: you see the bridge in the evening after tour groups leave, and you can add Blagaj or Kravice waterfalls the next day.

How do I get between Mostar and Sarajevo?

Trains take about 2 hours on a scenic line along the Neretva, but schedules have changed often, so check current timetables. Buses run several times a day and take about 2 h 30. Driving takes about 2 hours. The road and rail through the Neretva canyon are worth doing in daylight.
