Common questions
Is Montreal or Quebec City cheaper?
They are almost identical on our numbers: about C$277 per person per day at mid-range in Montreal and C$280 in Quebec City. Montreal has a wider range of cheaper food, from bagel shops to markets. Old Québec hotels inside the walls are pricey in summer and during the winter carnival, so staying in Saint-Roch can save money.
How do I get from Montreal to Quebec City?
VIA Rail trains take about 3 h 15 to 3 h 30 and arrive at Gare du Palais, close to the old town. Buses take about 3 h, and driving takes roughly 2 h 45 to 3 h on Highway 20 or 40. A car is useful in Quebec City only for Montmorency Falls or Île d'Orléans. Check current timetables.
How many days do I need in each?
Montreal needs at least three days for Old Montreal, Mount Royal, the Plateau, Mile End and the markets; four lets you add a museum or festival. Quebec City's old town is compact: two days covers it, the Citadelle, the Plains of Abraham and Montmorency Falls. Add a day for Île d'Orléans.
When is the best time to visit Montreal and Quebec City?
May to early October is best for walking, with July highs around 25°C; Montreal is at its best in May and September, and summer brings festivals. Winters are very cold, about -6°C in January, but Quebec City's winter carnival in February draws visitors. Autumn colour around late September to mid-October is a highlight nearby.
