Madrid or Toledo? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Madrid as your main base: world-class art museums, tapas neighbourhoods and nightlife that runs very late. Pick Toledo for a walled hilltop city of churches, synagogues and narrow lanes, best with one night so you see it after the day-trippers leave. Toledo is cheaper on the mid-range numbers: about €140 per person per day against €166 in Madrid.

Madrid: suits friends, solo travellers and couples who want the Prado, tapas bars and late nights in a big capital.

Toledo: suits couples and history lovers who want a compact medieval city with Christian, Jewish and Islamic heritage.

Common questions

Is Madrid or Toledo cheaper?

Toledo. Our mid-range estimate is about €140 per person per day there against about €166 in Madrid. Hotels and set lunches in Toledo cost less, though restaurants right by the Cathedral and Zocodover charge more. Madrid offers plenty of cheap tapas and menus del día if you eat where locals do, in La Latina or Lavapiés.

How do I get from Madrid to Toledo?

The high-speed train from Madrid Atocha takes about 33 minutes. Toledo station is outside the walls, so take a local bus or taxi up to Zocodover, or walk about 20 minutes. Buses from Plaza Elíptica take about an hour and run often. Check current timetables, and book the train ahead at weekends.

Is Toledo worth an overnight stay?

Yes, if you have the time. Most visitors arrive on morning tours and leave by late afternoon. Staying one night lets you walk the lanes when they are quiet, see the city lit up from the Mirador del Valle, and visit the Cathedral or synagogues early. A day trip still covers the main sights.
