Lisbon or Porto? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Lisbon for a bigger capital with more sights, nightlife, nearby beaches and Sintra, plus the most flight options. Pick Porto for a smaller, more compact city with port-wine cellars, the Douro valley and a calmer feel; it is marginally cheaper on our numbers. On a week in Portugal, do both by train.

Lisbon: suits couples, solo travellers and photographers who want viewpoints, fado, nightlife and day trips to Sintra and the coast.

Porto: suits couples and friends who want a compact riverside city, port cellars, hearty food and a day in the Douro valley.

Common questions

Is Lisbon or Porto cheaper?

Porto is marginally cheaper on our numbers: about €158 per person per day at mid-range against about €162 for Lisbon. The difference is small and mainly comes from accommodation, as central Lisbon hotels are pricier. Eating out is similar in both, and in both cities a set lunch in a neighbourhood tasca is still far cheaper than dinner in tourist areas.

How do I get from Lisbon to Porto?

The train is the easiest option. Fast Alfa Pendular trains take about 2 h 50 to 3 h between Lisbon and Porto, with several departures a day; Intercidades trains are slightly slower and cheaper. Buses take around 3 h 30. Flying is only about an hour in the air but rarely faster once you add airport time.

How many days do I need in Lisbon and Porto?

Lisbon needs at least three days for its neighbourhoods and Belém, plus one for Sintra. Porto can be enjoyed in two days, with a third for a Douro valley day trip. For a week in Portugal, four days in Lisbon and three in Porto is a balanced split that leaves time for one day trip from each.

When is the best time to visit Lisbon and Porto?

Late spring and early autumn suit both: April to June and September. Lisbon is warmer, with July highs around 29°C, and has a long season. Porto is cooler, around 24°C in July, and rainier in winter, so it is best from April to August. For both in one trip, May, June and September work best.
