Season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Highs rise from about 16°C in March to 18°C in April and 20°C in May. March is often wet (about 14 rainy days), April and May less so (about 9).

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Highs of about 22–24°C, rarely hot thanks to the Atlantic, with only 2–5 rainy days in July and August. The São João festival on the night of 23 June is the city's biggest party; June to August are the busiest months.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

September is still about 23°C and a great time to visit, with the grape harvest in the Douro Valley. October (about 21°C) and November (about 17°C) bring more rain, with 14–15 rainy days.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Mild but wet: highs of about 13–15°C and lows of 7–10°C, with 9–19 rainy days (December is the wettest in the data). Quiet and cheap, with cosy tascas and port lodges.

Events worth planning around

When to avoid

If you want low prices and calm streets, avoid São João week and July–August. December and the late autumn months are the wettest, so bring waterproofs if you go then.
