Which is better for nightlife?

Madrid. Nights start late and clubs run until dawn, with bars in Malasaña, Chueca and La Latina. Lisbon has good street-drinking scenes in Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré, but Madrid's scene is bigger and runs later, with dinner at ten and clubs past six. Choose Madrid for nightlife.

When is the best time to visit?

Madrid is best in April, May, September and October; July reaches about 35°C and the city empties in August. Lisbon is pleasant from March to November, with July around 29°C and sea breezes. Winter is mild in Lisbon, around 14°C, colder and drier in Madrid, around 10°C.

How do I travel between Lisbon and Madrid?

Fly; the flight is about 1 h 15, with frequent departures between the two capitals. Buses take around 8 hours, often overnight. There is currently no practical direct train, so check for current rail options before planning a land route. Driving takes about 6 hours on motorways.
