Hoi An or Hue? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Hoi An for a lantern-lit old trading town, tailors, cycling to the beach and a relaxed pace. Pick Hue for the former imperial capital: the Citadel, royal tombs along the Perfume River and a more local, less polished city. Hue is cheaper on the mid-range numbers: about 1,600,000 VND per person per day against 1,900,000 VND (about €65) in Hoi An.
Hoi An: suits couples, first-timers and friends who want a pretty, walkable old town, great food and a beach nearby.
Hue: suits history lovers, solo travellers and friends who want imperial monuments and a less touristy city.

Common questions
Is Hoi An or Hue cheaper?
Hue. Our mid-range estimate is about 1,600,000 VND per person per day there against about 1,900,000 VND, or €65, in Hoi An. Hoi An has more boutique hotels and tourist-priced restaurants in the Ancient Town. In Hue, food and rooms are cheaper, though you may spend more on transport to reach the tombs.
How do I get from Hoi An to Hue?
By car or bus it takes about 3 hours via the Hai Van tunnel, a little over 130 km. Many travellers hire a car to take the scenic Hai Van Pass instead and stop on the way. There is no train station in Hoi An; the train runs from Da Nang to Hue in about 2 h 30 to 3 hours. Check current timetables.
How many days do I need in each?
Two days in Hue covers the Citadel, two or three royal tombs and a river trip to Thien Mu Pagoda. Hoi An deserves three or four days if you want time for the beach, cycling, a cooking class and tailor fittings, which usually need a second visit. Five or six days together is comfortable.
When is the best time to visit?
Roughly February to May is the most reliable period for both. June is the hottest, around 35°C. The rainy season in central Vietnam usually runs from about September to December, with heavy rain and the risk of flooding, particularly in Hoi An's Ancient Town and in Hue. Check the forecast if travelling in autumn.
