Granada or Madrid? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Madrid for big-city energy: the Prado, Reina Sofía, late nights and Spain's widest restaurant scene. Pick Granada for the Alhambra, Moorish streets in the Albaicín and free tapas with every drink, in a smaller city with the Sierra Nevada behind it. Granada is slightly cheaper on our numbers and better value in practice.
Granada: suits couples, solo travellers and friends who want the Alhambra, hillside views and cheap tapas evenings in a compact city.
Madrid: suits first-timers, friends and art lovers who want world-class museums, food markets and nightlife that runs until dawn.

Common questions
Is Granada or Madrid cheaper?
Granada is slightly cheaper on our numbers: about €161 per person per day at mid-range against about €166 for Madrid. In practice the difference feels bigger in the evenings, because many Granada bars still serve a free tapa with each drink, so a round of drinks becomes a light dinner. Madrid's hotels also climb during big events and trade fairs.
How do I get from Madrid to Granada?
Direct high-speed trains run from Madrid to Granada in about 3 h 15 to 3 h 30, arriving at Granada's station a short taxi or bus ride from the centre. Long-distance buses take around five hours and cost less. Flights exist but are rarely faster once airport time is added. Check current timetables and book ahead for cheaper fares.
Do I need to book the Alhambra in advance?
Yes. Tickets for the Alhambra, including the Nasrid Palaces, are limited and issued for a specific entry time to the palaces, and they often sell out weeks ahead in spring and autumn. Book on the official site as soon as your dates are fixed, then plan your train around the time slot rather than the other way round.
When is the best time to visit Granada and Madrid?
Both are best in April, May, September and October. July and August are very hot, with afternoons in the mid-thirties in both cities, and Madrid empties in August as locals leave. Granada in winter can be cold at night but bright, with snow on the Sierra Nevada, which makes for beautiful views from the Alhambra.
