Florence or Milan? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Florence for Renaissance art, a compact historic centre and Tuscan food; it is the better choice for most leisure travellers and cheaper on our numbers. Pick Milan for fashion, design, aperitivo culture and a modern city with excellent transport and quick access to Lake Como. Milan is the better base for nightlife and shopping, Florence for sightseeing.
Florence: suits couples, honeymooners and first-timers who want to walk between great museums, churches and Tuscan countryside day trips.
Milan: suits solo travellers, design and fashion fans and digital nomads who want a modern city, aperitivo and day trips to the lakes.

Common questions
Is Florence or Milan cheaper?
Florence is cheaper on our numbers: about €194 per person per day at mid-range against about €240 for Milan. Milan's hotels are pricier, especially during fashion weeks and the Salone del Mobile design fair in April, when rates can double. In Florence, eating away from the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio, especially in Oltrarno or Sant'Ambrogio, keeps costs reasonable.
How long is the train from Milan to Florence?
High-speed trains run between Milano Centrale and Firenze Santa Maria Novella in about 1 h 55, with several departures every hour for much of the day. Both stations are central, so it is far easier than flying. Fares are cheapest booked a few weeks ahead; last-minute tickets on busy days can cost noticeably more.
Is Milan worth visiting if I only care about art?
It is worth a day or two, not more. Leonardo's Last Supper, the Duomo, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Castello Sforzesco are excellent, but Florence has a far denser concentration of Renaissance art within walking distance. If art is the main reason, give Florence most of your time and treat Milan as an arrival point.
When should I visit Florence and Milan?
For Florence, September and October are best: still warm but past the July heat, which reaches the low thirties. Milan is good in April, June and October; check the dates of fashion weeks and the April design fair, when hotels fill. Both are hot in July and August, and Milan is quieter in August when many locals leave.
