Common questions
Is Essaouira or Marrakech cheaper?
Essaouira. Our mid-range estimate is about €82 per person per day in Essaouira against about €135 in Marrakech. Riads and restaurants cost less in Essaouira, and fish grilled at the port is cheap. Marrakech has plenty of budget options too, but its most popular riads and rooftops charge more.
When is the best time to visit?
Essaouira is pleasant all year, around 19°C in January and 26°C in August, thanks to the Atlantic wind. Marrakech is best from about November to April; in July it reaches about 40°C. In summer, Essaouira is a good escape from the heat.
Is Essaouira worth a day trip from Marrakech?
It is possible, but long: about 3 hours each way leaves only a few hours in town. Staying at least one night is far better. You see the medina once day-trippers leave, eat fish at the port, and walk the ramparts at sunset.
How do I get between Essaouira and Marrakech?
Buses run several times a day and take about 3 hours. By car or shared taxi it is about 2 h 30 to 3 h on a good road. Private transfers are easy to book through riads. Check current timetables and book bus seats a day ahead in busy periods.
