Corfu or Crete? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Corfu for a green, Venetian-flavoured island with a UNESCO old town and a compact size you can cover in a week; pick Crete for a big, varied island with Minoan sites, gorges, long beaches and the stronger food culture. Crete is slightly cheaper on mid-range numbers (€165 vs €175 per person per day). With one week, Corfu is easier; with two, Crete gives you more.
Corfu: suits couples, honeymooners, families and older travellers who want lush scenery, an elegant old town and coves.
Crete: suits families, couples and active travellers who want beaches, hiking, ancient sites and village food.

Common questions
Is Corfu or Crete cheaper?
Crete is slightly cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €165 per person per day against €175 in Corfu. Both have good-value tavernas, and both get pricier in August. On Crete you'll probably pay for a hire car for most of your stay, since sights are far apart. Corfu's distances are shorter.
How do I travel between Corfu and Crete?
There's no direct ferry, and the sea route would take a very long time. Most people fly via Athens: roughly 1 hour from Corfu to Athens, then about 50 minutes to Heraklion or Chania, plus connection time. Some seasonal direct flights may run in summer. Check current timetables.
Which island has better beaches?
Crete has more variety: pink sand at Elafonisi, the Balos lagoon, long sandy beaches in the north and wild coves in the south. Corfu has beautiful bays at Paleokastritsa and on the west coast, with greener backdrops, but many beaches are smaller and pebbly.
Which is better for a one-week holiday?
Corfu. You can see the Old Town, the west-coast bays and the north in a week without long drives. Crete in one week means choosing one region, either Chania in the west or Heraklion and the east, because the island is about 260 km long. Crete rewards ten days or more.
