Bologna or Venice? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Venice for a unique, car-free city on water that you should see at least once, ideally staying overnight; pick Bologna for a cheaper, food-focused base with real local life. Bologna is clearly cheaper on mid-range numbers (€190 vs €220 per person per day). The best plan for most people: base in Bologna, spend one or two nights in Venice.
Bologna: suits food lovers, friends and solo travellers who want a lively, affordable city and easy rail day trips.
Venice: suits couples, honeymooners and photographers who want canals, the Rialto and St Mark's in a car-free city.

Common questions
Is Bologna or Venice cheaper?
Bologna is clearly cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €190 per person per day against €220 in Venice. Venice charges for almost everything, from water-bus tickets to drinks on a square, and rooms in the historic centre are expensive. Day visitors on peak dates also have to pay an entry fee, so check the rules before going.
Can I visit Venice as a day trip from Bologna?
Yes. Fast trains take about 1 h 30, so a day trip works. But you'll arrive with the day-tripper crowds and leave before Venice is at its best, in the evening and early morning. If you can, stay one night in Venice.
Where should I eat in Venice to avoid tourist traps?
Avoid places right on St Mark's Square and Rialto Bridge with photo menus. Head for cicchetti bars in Cannaregio, especially along Fondamenta della Misericordia and Ormesini, and around Campo Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro. The Rialto market area in San Polo has good bacari, which are small wine bars, for lunch.
Which is better for a romantic trip?
Venice, as long as you stay overnight and walk the quieter areas after dark. Canals, gondolas and sunset views are hard to beat. Bologna is more about good food, wine and arcaded evening strolls than romance. Combine them: start with a couple of nights in Venice, then eat well in Bologna.
