Common questions

Is Bologna or Naples cheaper?

Naples is cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €175 per person per day against €190 in Bologna. The bigger difference is at the budget end, where Naples pizza and street food are very cheap. Comfort-level hotels are also lower in Naples. Bologna's prices rise during trade fairs.

How long is the train from Bologna to Naples?

High-speed trains take about 3 h 30 between Bologna Centrale and Napoli Centrale, usually passing Florence and Rome. It's a straightforward, comfortable trip with several departures a day. Book in advance for cheaper fares and check current timetables. Flying makes little sense once airport transfers are added.

Is Naples safe for tourists?

Naples has a rougher reputation than it deserves, and most visitors have no problems. Take the usual city precautions: watch for pickpockets on crowded buses and around the station, keep phones off café tables, and use licensed taxis. Bologna feels calmer, but petty theft happens in both.

Which is better for a food trip?

Both are among the best food cities in Italy, but they're different. Bologna is about fresh egg pasta, ragù, mortadella and markets. Naples is about pizza, fried street food, seafood and pastries. If you want to eat in restaurants, choose Bologna; if you like eating on the street, choose Naples.
