Common questions
Is Bologna or Milan cheaper?
Bologna is clearly cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €190 per person per day against €240 in Milan. Milan's hotels and drinks are among the priciest in Italy, especially during fashion weeks and the design fair in April. Bologna can also spike during its trade fairs, so check event calendars before booking.
How long is the train from Bologna to Milan?
High-speed trains take about 1 h to 1 h 15 between Bologna Centrale and Milano Centrale, with frequent departures through the day. Regional trains are cheaper but take more than two hours. Check current timetables and book early for lower high-speed fares.
Do I need to book The Last Supper in advance?
Yes. Visits are in small timed groups, and tickets often sell out weeks ahead, particularly in spring and summer. Book on the official site as soon as your dates are fixed. If you miss out, guided tours sometimes still have places, at a higher price.
Which is better as a base for northern Italy?
For food and central position, Bologna: Florence is about 35–40 minutes away by fast train, and Venice and Milan are both about an hour or more. Milan is better for Lake Como and the Alps. Bologna is also cheaper on mid-range numbers, which matters on a longer stay.
