Bangkok or Singapore? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Bangkok for street food, temples, markets and late nights at a far lower cost (about 4,000 baht a day mid-range, roughly €100–105). Pick Singapore for an easy, spotless, very safe city with hawker centres and family attractions, at about €182 a day mid-range.

Bangkok: suits friends, solo travellers and first-timers in Asia who want temples, markets, street food and nightlife on a moderate budget.

Singapore: suits families, first-timers and anyone who wants a stress-free, well-organised city with excellent hawker food.

Common questions

Is Bangkok or Singapore cheaper?

Bangkok, by a wide margin. Our mid-range estimate is about 4,000 baht per person per day, roughly €100 to €105, against about €182 in Singapore. Hotels and alcohol are where Singapore costs most. Hawker food in Singapore is cheap, but Bangkok street food and taxis cost even less.

When is the best time to visit?

Both are hot all year. Bangkok runs from about 31°C in January to about 33°C in March, and November to February is its driest, most comfortable stretch. Singapore stays around 29 to 30°C with rain possible any month. For a combined trip, November to February is the safest choice.

Which is better for families?

Singapore. It is very safe and clean, the MRT is easy with prams, and the zoo, Gardens by the Bay and Sentosa are built for children. Bangkok works for families too, but heat, traffic and uneven pavements make long sightseeing days harder with small children.

How do I get between Bangkok and Singapore?

Fly. Direct flights take about 2 h 15 to 2 h 30 and run many times a day from both Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. Overland by train via Malaysia is possible but takes two days or more with changes. Check current timetables if you want to go by rail.
