Bali or Bangkok? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Bali for a slower trip of rice terraces, temples, surf beaches, spas and volcano hikes, ideal for couples and honeymooners. Pick Bangkok for a big-city trip built around street food, temples, markets and nightlife. On our numbers Bali is slightly cheaper at about €87 a day mid-range, against 4,000 baht (roughly €100) in Bangkok.

Bali: suits couples, honeymooners, solo travellers and digital nomads who want nature, beaches, yoga and spa time more than city sights.

Bangkok: suits first-timers, friends and solo travellers who want street food, temples, shopping and nights out in a huge city.

Common questions

Is Bali or Bangkok cheaper?

Bali is slightly cheaper on our numbers: about €87 per person per day at mid-range, against about 4,000 baht in Bangkok, roughly €100. Bangkok street food is cheaper than almost anything in Bali, but Bali's mid-range villas and guesthouses give a lot for the money. Drivers in Bali add up, because there is little public transport.

How do I get from Bangkok to Bali?

Fly. Direct flights between Bangkok and Bali's Ngurah Rai airport take about 4 h 15 to 4 h 30, with several daily departures, and connecting flights via Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Jakarta are also common. There is no realistic overland or sea route for a holiday. Check current schedules and baggage rules, as low-cost fares often exclude checked bags.

When is the best time to visit Bali and Bangkok?

Bali's drier months are roughly April to October; the wet season peaks around December to February, though rain usually comes in bursts. Bangkok is hot all year, around 31–33°C, with the most comfortable, drier spell from about November to February and the hottest spell around March, about 33°C. For both in one trip, roughly May or late October to November is a fair compromise.

Which is better for families?

Bali, for most families. Villas with pools, calm beaches such as Sanur and Nusa Dua, and the countryside around Ubud make it easy with children. Bangkok works too, with malls, aquariums and parks, but heat, traffic and pavements are tiring for small children. Note that Bali's traffic means long car journeys between areas, so pick one or two bases.
