Is Yogyakarta safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Yogyakarta is generally safe and friendly, with low levels of violent crime against visitors. The realistic risks are traffic, petty theft, commission scams around Malioboro, heat and sun at the temples, and the volcanic activity of Mount Merapi.

The real risks

Commission scams

On Malioboro, men may say the palace is closed and steer you to a batik 'exhibition'; check opening times yourself.

Traffic

Motorbike traffic is heavy; cross carefully, and wear a helmet on Gojek or Grab bikes.

Petty theft

Keep phones and bags secure on Malioboro, at markets and on busy evenings.

Mount Merapi

Activity levels change; lava tours run only in permitted zones. Check the current alert level and follow official instructions.

Heat and sun

Highs are about 29–31°C all year, and the temples have little shade; bring a hat and water.

Earthquakes

Java is seismically active; know the exits in your hotel and follow local guidance.

Areas and times to take care

There are no well-known no-go areas for visitors. Malioboro and Prawirotaman are busy into the evening; take normal care with valuables and avoid quiet lanes alone very late at night.

Getting around safely

Grab and Gojek are cheap and reliable for cars and motorbike taxis. Agree becak prices before getting in. For temples and Merapi, use a recommended driver or tour operator.

Solo and women travellers

Many solo women travel in Yogyakarta comfortably. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially at the Kraton, mosques and temples. Use ride-hailing apps at night and take the usual care in bars.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or refilled filtered water. Heat, sun and mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue are the main concerns, especially in the rainy season. Private hospitals in the city handle most issues; travel insurance is essential.

Emergency: 112 for emergencies; 110 police, 118 or 119 ambulance.
