Is Yogyakarta expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Short answer

Yogyakarta is one of the cheapest cultural cities in Southeast Asia: a budget day is about Rp 520,000 per person (roughly €28) and a mid-range day about Rp 1,300,000. Food, ride-hailing and rooms are very cheap; the foreign-priced tickets for Borobudur and Prambanan and day drivers are the main costs.

Where the money goes

Sights are the biggest daily cost because Borobudur and Prambanan charge foreigners about US$25 each, with separate tickets for Borobudur's upper terraces and for Ratu Boko. Day drivers and Merapi jeep tours are the other main expense. Rooms are cheap, from about Rp 150,000–350,000 in Sosrowijayan to Rp 400,000–1,000,000 in Prawirotaman or near Malioboro, though hotels usually add about 21% tax and service. Food is very cheap at warungs and angkringan stalls.

When it is cheaper

The rainy season, roughly November to March, is usually cheaper and quieter, apart from Christmas and New Year. Lebaran (Eid) holidays and Indonesian school holidays push up hotel and train prices.
