Is Washington safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

The tourist areas of Washington, D.C., including the National Mall, Capitol Hill, Georgetown and Dupont Circle, are generally safe and well policed. The realistic risks are pickpocketing, phone theft and car break-ins, plus heat in summer. Crime is concentrated in neighbourhoods visitors rarely go.

The real risks

Pickpocketing and phone theft

On the Metro, at crowded monuments and in nightlife areas. Keep phones out of sight near train doors.

Car break-ins

Do not leave anything visible in parked cars.

Heat and humidity

Summer highs of 29–31°C with high humidity; the Mall has little shade, so carry water.

Protests and security closures

Demonstrations are common and usually peaceful; security can close areas near the White House and Capitol at short notice.

Areas and times to take care

The Mall, Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Penn Quarter, the Wharf and Adams Morgan are busy and comfortable with normal care. Some areas, such as parts of Southeast across the Anacostia River and around some Metro stations late at night, have higher crime; take a taxi or rideshare late.

Getting around safely

The Metro is clean and safe, but quieter late at night. Uber, Lyft and taxis are widely available. Walking the Mall by day is easy; distances are bigger than they look.

Solo and women travellers

Washington is comfortable for solo women. The tourist areas are busy and well policed. Use rideshares at night if you are going far, and watch your drink in bars.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe. Summer heat and humidity are the main health issues, and winter can be cold and icy. US healthcare is expensive, so carry travel insurance.

Emergency: 911
