Is Vietnam safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Vietnam is generally safe for travellers, with low violent crime. The realistic risks are traffic, bag and phone snatching from motorbikes in the big cities, taxi and tour overcharging, and seasonal typhoons and floods. Most visitors have no serious problems.

The real risks

Traffic

Motorbikes flow everywhere; cross streets slowly and steadily without stopping or running, and use crossings where they exist.

Bag and phone snatching

Thieves on motorbikes target phones and bags in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; hold phones away from the road and carry bags on the side away from traffic.

Taxi and tour scams

Use Grab or reputable taxi firms, agree prices first and book tours through trusted operators.

Typhoons and floods

Storms cancel Ha Long cruises especially from July to October, and the centre (Hoi An, Hue) floods from October to December.

Motorbike riding

Accidents are common; ride only if experienced, wear a helmet and check your licence and insurance.

Areas and times to take care

Tourist areas such as Hanoi's Old Quarter, Hoi An and District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City are fine but crowded; watch belongings, especially at night in busy nightlife streets. In remote border and mountain areas, follow local guidance.

Getting around safely

Grab works in all cities and is the easiest option. Domestic flights are the fastest way to cover distances; the Reunification Express train is slow but scenic between Hue and Da Nang. Use tour shuttles for Ha Long and Ninh Binh.

Solo and women travellers

Vietnam is generally comfortable for women travelling alone. Use Grab at night, watch drinks in bars, and choose well-reviewed guesthouses and tour companies.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water. Street food at busy stalls is generally fine. Mosquitoes carry dengue in the rainy season, so use repellent. Heat and humidity are high in the south all year. Good international clinics exist in the big cities; travel insurance is essential.

Emergency: 113 for police, 114 for fire, 115 for ambulance.
