Is Tulum safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

The tourist areas of Tulum are generally safe with normal precautions, but Quintana Roo has seen crime linked to organised groups and the drug trade, so check current official advice. The realistic risks for visitors are petty theft, card skimming, taxi overcharging, road accidents, sun and sea conditions; buying drugs is both illegal and dangerous.

The real risks

Drugs and nightlife

Do not buy drugs; drug-related violence has affected bars and nightlife areas in the region. Keep to well-known venues and watch your drinks.

Petty theft

Do not leave valuables on the beach or in parked cars at cenotes and beaches.

Card skimming and 'cash only' tricks

Keep your card in sight, use ATMs inside banks or supermarkets and carry some pesos as backup.

Taxi overcharging

Agree the fare before you get in; taxis in Tulum are expensive.

Sun, sea and cenotes

Strong sun, currents on some beaches and slippery cenote steps; use biodegradable sunscreen and follow lifeguard and cenote rules.

Areas and times to take care

Tulum town, the archaeological zone and the beach road are busy and generally safe. Late at night, avoid unlit stretches of the beach road and quiet streets on foot; use a taxi or ride with others.

Getting around safely

Bikes are common between town and the beach; use lights at night. Colectivos run along the highway by day. The Tren Maya and ADO buses link Tulum with Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Agree taxi fares in advance.

Solo and women travellers

Many women travel alone in Tulum. Usual precautions apply: avoid walking alone on dark roads at night, watch drinks in bars and choose accommodation with good reviews and secure rooms.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; drink bottled or filtered water. The sun is strong all year (about 27–31°C) and mosquitoes are common in the rainy season, so use repellent. Hurricane risk peaks in September and October.

Emergency: 911 (police, ambulance and fire).
