Is Tulum expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Tulum is expensive by Mexican standards, especially in the beach hotel zone, where prices are often close to US or European resort levels. Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: beach cabañas and designer hotels cost several times more than rooms in town. Cenote entry fees, Sian Ka'an and Cobá tours, and beach clubs with minimum spends come next. Taxis are expensive, so bikes, colectivos and a rental car save money. Food in town taquerías is cheap, while beach-road restaurants may charge in US dollars. Quintana Roo charges a visitor fee (VISITAX), and hotels add taxes.
When it is cheaper
Prices are usually lower from May to early December outside holidays (the rainy and sargassum season), and highest from Christmas to Easter.
How to spend less
- Stay in Tulum town and cycle to the ruins and beach.
- Eat at taquerías and cocinas económicas in town; try the comida corrida set lunch.
- Use colectivos along the highway to cenotes and Akumal.
- Pay in pesos and decline card terminals' offers to charge in your home currency.
- Ask about minimum spend before taking a beach-club sunbed.
- Visit public beaches such as Playa Paraíso and Playa Ruinas instead of beach clubs.
