Is Tinos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Tinos is very safe, with almost no crime. The realistic risks are the strong meltemi wind in summer, winding village roads, and crowds on the main pilgrimage days.

The real risks

Meltemi wind

Strong north winds in July and August make north-coast beaches rough and can delay ferries; swim on the south coast on windy days.

Winding roads

Village roads are good but narrow and winding; drive slowly and watch for goats and buses.

Pilgrimage crowds

On 25 March and 15 August, Chora is extremely crowded; keep valuables close and plan transport.

Exomvourgo climb

The hill is windy and rocky; wear good shoes and bring a jacket.

Heat

Summer highs reach about 29°C on average, more on hot days; carry water in the villages.

Surfing at Kolymbithra

The waves can be strong; swim only in calm conditions.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. Chora's harbour is lively in the evening, and the villages are very quiet at night.

Getting around safely

KTEL buses are safe but infrequent. Taxis are available in Chora; book ahead in peak season. Drive carefully on mountain roads and in strong wind.

Solo and women travellers

Tinos is very comfortable for solo women, with a calm, local atmosphere and very low crime. A car helps, as buses to the villages are few.

Health, water and heat

Many visitors drink bottled water. Sun and wind exposure are the main summer issues. Tinos has a health centre; serious cases go to Syros or Athens, so travel insurance is important.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 100 police, 166 ambulance, 108 coastguard.
