Where the money goes
Rooms cost about €50–90 a double in Chora's back streets, €90–170 in Chora or on the southern beaches, and €150–350 for restored village houses. The car (about €35–60 a day plus fuel) is the main extra, because the marble villages, Volax and the dovecotes are spread out. Food is excellent and fairly priced; sights are mostly free or a few euros. Ferries from Piraeus or Rafina are on top.
When it is cheaper
May, early June and late September are usually cheaper than July–August, often by roughly 20–30% for rooms. Around 25 March and 15 August, prices rise and rooms sell out months ahead.
How to spend less
- Avoid the pilgrimage dates of 25 March and 15 August unless you come for them.
- Stay in Chora, where rooms are cheapest and buses start.
- Ask the price per kilo before ordering fish in Panormos.
- Check village taverna hours before driving out, as many close at lunchtime outside July–August.
- Buy cheese, louza and artichokes from shops in Chora to take home.
- Share a small rental car and group villages by area.
