Is South Africa safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Millions of visitors travel South Africa without problems, but crime rates are high and require real care. The realistic risks are mugging and theft in cities, smash-and-grab incidents at traffic lights, ATM fraud and crime on isolated hiking trails. Most tourist areas, safari parks and winelands are calm when you follow local advice.
The real risks
Mugging and theft
Avoid walking alone after dark, keep phones out of sight and carry little cash.
Smash-and-grab
Keep car windows up and bags out of sight when driving in cities.
ATM fraud
Use ATMs inside banks or malls and refuse help from strangers.
Hiking trails
Hike Table Mountain and Lion's Head in groups and at busy times; check recent advice.
Road safety
Avoid driving between cities at night; watch for pedestrians and animals.
Areas and times to take care
In Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point, Camps Bay and the City Bowl are busy and generally fine, but the CBD empties at night. In Johannesburg, visit Soweto and the Apartheid Museum with a guide or Uber, and stay in areas like Rosebank or Sandton. Townships are best visited with local guides.
Getting around safely
Use Uber or Bolt in cities; avoid minibus taxis unless with a local. Rental cars are the best way to explore. Do not stop for strangers on the road.
Solo and women travellers
Women travel solo in South Africa, but extra care is needed. Avoid walking alone at night, use Uber, choose accommodation in safe areas and join group hikes and tours.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe in major cities. Kruger and parts of the north-east are malaria areas, especially in summer; take medical advice. The sun is strong, and Cape Town's wind can be fierce in summer.
