Is Slovenia safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Slovenia is one of the safest countries in Europe, with very low crime. The real risks are mountain hiking, driving on pass roads such as Vršič, and cold river water. Petty theft is rare but possible in Ljubljana's busy centre and at crowded lake car parks.

The real risks

Mountain hiking

Weather changes fast in the Julian Alps; carry layers, start early and check forecasts. Some trails need via ferrata gear.

Pass roads

Vršič has 50 hairpins and is shared with cyclists and motorbikes; drive slowly and check it is open.

Cold water

The Soča is 8-12°C even in summer; use wetsuits for rafting and swim only where safe.

Car break-ins

At trailheads and lake car parks, leave nothing visible in the car.

Petty theft

Pickpocketing is rare but possible in Ljubljana's crowded centre in summer.

Areas and times to take care

All main areas, including Ljubljana at night, are safe. Metelkova, the alternative cultural centre in Ljubljana, is lively at night and generally fine, but keep belongings close. In the mountains, the main risk is weather, not crime.

Getting around safely

Buses and trains are safe. Taxis and ride-hailing are available in Ljubljana. Drive with headlights on at all times (required by law), and winter tyres or chains are compulsory in winter conditions.

Solo and women travellers

Slovenia is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions apply at night. On mountain hikes, tell someone your route or join a group.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is excellent and safe to drink. Ticks are common in forests and meadows from spring to autumn; check for them after walks and consider vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis if hiking a lot. Summer highs reach about 27-29°C in Ljubljana.

Emergency: 112 (ambulance and fire), police 113
