Is Slovenia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Slovenia is mid-priced: cheaper than neighbouring Austria and Italy, but pricier than Croatia's inland or the rest of the Balkans. A mid-range day is about €180 per person, with rooms and a rental car taking most of it. Tickets at the famous sights (Bled, Postojna, Vintgar) have risen and add up quickly.

Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest share, especially in Bled and Ljubljana's old town in summer. Transport is next: a rental car is the easiest way to see the Alps and the Soča, and you need a vignette for motorways. Sightseeing tickets at Bled, Postojna Cave and Vintgar are each €15-40. Food is fair value, especially lunch menus and Friday's Odprta kuhna food market. Towns charge a tourist tax of about €2-3 per person per night.
When it is cheaper
May, early June and late September to October are often 20-30% cheaper than July-August in Bled and Bovec (check current rates). Winter is cheapest outside Christmas markets and ski weekends.
How to spend less
- Base yourself in Ljubljana or Bohinj, cheaper than Bled for rooms.
- Eat the weekday lunch menu (malica), much cheaper than dinner.
- Walk the free path around Lake Bled instead of paying for every attraction.
- Take buses from Ljubljana to Bled, Bohinj and Piran if you do not need a car.
- Buy the e-vignette online before driving on motorways to avoid fines.
- Choose Škocjan Caves or Postojna, rather than both, if money is tight.
